A day on the threshold of a new epoch; Epoken – we open the doors to Fagernäs and let the new place begin to take shape.
In 2026, Art Lab Gnesta sheds its skin and steps into Epoken. After fifteen years in the old brewery in Gnesta, the organisation is moving to Fagernäs in the neighbouring village of Mölnbo, and shifting it up to the next level. Here, a new place for artistic production, residencies, research, participation, exhibitions and public programmes is being nested into being. Fifteen years of artistic public practice are being set loose in a larger, wilder terrain – a habitat filled with artists’ studios as well as a skate space and other new ultra local collaborations.
2026 is a year of transition, with the locations Bryggerihuset and Fagernäs existing side by side. Terike Haapoja’s exhibition By the Beasts for the Beasts stretches between the two sites, taking over the façades of both buildings. The work muddies the boundaries between human, animal and beast – boundaries that have been drawn and enforced at Fagernäs for more than a century.
The site is a former dairy factory and large-scale farm, established in 1890. Later, the same space was used to manufacture pesticides and rat poison. From the cow to be milked to the rat to be poisoned, animals have been inscribed into the history of Fagernäs – as resources or pests, useful or unwanted, but always on human terms.
Now Epoken is moving in, and other bodies, species and agencies are laying claim to the place. Here, new ideas are now allowed to breed, burrow and run wild.
Terike Haapoja’s flags are raised at our sites in the run-up to the Swedish election, at a political moment when questions of representation, solidarity and power are brought sharply into focus. By the Beasts, for the Beasts turns our gaze in an utopian exercise of how things might be otherwise. As we raise Haapoja’s flags over Gnesta and Mölnbo, a new reckoning of time begins.

The Beasts Need a Bath
Epoken begins at the water. Together with neighbours, children, skaters, visitors and other beasts, we connect with Lillsjön and begin creating a new watering hole. We finish the jetty together, clear the shoreline and make room for future swims, encounters and whatever else we might dream up. And nothing goes to waste. The timber from the old jetty moves on to another life, becoming building material for an obstacle course or den for hobby horses and other imaginary creatures, built together with whoever wants to join in. Into Epoken – A Guided Tour of Fagernäs
Step inside the old Fagernäs factory. We begin with an introduction to Terike Haapoja’s exhibition before opening the doors to the former dairy factory and pesticide works. We move through future workshops, studios, exhibition hall and skate space, out into the park and surrounding landscape, following the traces of the lives that have already passed through this place.
